Step Ladders

Most step ladders have a useful wide and flat platform at the top, which comes in handy for resting tools, especially when painting.  It certainly makes life easier to be able to rest your paint can or roller tray within easy reach.  Many stepladders have a hand rail across the top for extra support and to give you something to hold onto.  This means that even those of use who are a bit nervous of heights should be fine on a stepladder.

Although step ladders are not as high as other types of ladder, sensible safety precautions should still be taken.  Look for a step ladder with footpads on its feet for extra grip, and corrugated or non-slip steps for your comfort.  Ensure you always position your stepladder on a flat, level surface.  When working up there, don't over reach and do make sure the clothing you wear isn't likely to get caught on the ladder.
