Extension Ladders

Extension ladders are designed for use mainly outside, where high heights need to be reached, which are beyond the reach of an ordinary fixed length or step ladder.  An extension ladder comes in handy for all kinds of jobs, from decorating the outside of a house, to cleaning out the gutters or replacing roof tiles.  The great advantage of extension ladders is that you are able to extend them and adjust the length according to the job you're doing.  The 1:4 safety rule is that for every 4ft up you want to go, the bottom of your ladder needs to come out 1ft, so it is really convenient to be able to adjust the height of a ladder when working at varying heights.

Aluminum extension ladders are very popular, because aluminum is both durable and lightweight, making a ladder made from this material really easy to move.  However, it's not advisable to use an aluminum ladder if there are any electrical wires nearby.  For electrical work, fiberglass extension ladders are safer, although much heavier to move from place to place.  It's often possible to adjust the height of your ladder a rung at a time, which gives you more control over your work.  Safety should come first, so always ensure the feet of your ladder are on a level surface and the extended portion is locked securely in place, to avoid accidents.

Extension ladders consist of two or more shorter ladders that are fixed together and can be extended either by sliding over each other, or with a telescopic design where tubes slide into each other, or with a folding design.  They come in varying total lengths.  In general, an extension ladder can support weights of up to 375lbs, but you should always refer to your user instructions for clarification.  If you intend to do a big paint job or clean windows with your ladder, there are lots of accessories available to make life easier for you, such as hooks for holding paint tins or hangers for buckets.
